The Audrain City-County Health Unit, with the guidance from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Service’s Maternal Child Health Program, is identifying and developing intervention strategies to establish a comprehensive plan to address obesity and its negative effects within our community. The main intervention that is planned is to develop and implement a Roundtable Group. This group will initially be made up of community-based entities such as local public and private schools, physicians, nurses, dieticians, food managers, other health organizations, YMCA, local government officials, elected officials, etc. that will begin to answer some general questions regarding overweight and obesity in Audrain County. These questions include: · What is driving and influencing the obesity epidemic in Audrain County? · What resources do you have that could or are being used to address obesity? · What ideas do you have that could lead to a community-based program? This initial meeting is scheduled for 28 May 2008. After the initial meeting, open forums shall be scheduled and conducted within Audrain County to spread the word of the workings of the Roundtable Group and to identify those members of the community who have an interest in working to address obesity and/or overweight in Audrain County. The ultimate goal is two-fold: 1) Try to get the community to work together through collaboration to address the issue as a team. We can better affect the epidemic together when we combine our ideas, abilities, and resources; and allowing us to address a broader audience, rather than trying to do so individually and ultimately limit our impact. 2) Get the community talking and thinking so that even if entities and organizations don’t want to work together, they will at least work towards an outcome that affects obesity and/or overweight. |

Rethink Your Drink…Most Americans get 21 percent of their calories from beverages! More sugary drinks over the past 30 years add up to more calories. These extra calories not only contribute to obesity, but also to diets that are less nutritious. Currently, most children and teens are not getting enough calcium to protect their bones. For a healthier diet, encourage low-fat milk with meals and water for thirst. Calorie Alert! When you drink your calories in the form of soft drinks, fruit drinks and other high-sugar, high-calorie beverages you are more apt to gain weight. Liquid calories don’t make you feel full – as a result, you end up overeating. By simply cutting out one 20 oz. soft drink a day, you cut enough calories to lose 27 pounds in one year! The chart below may surprise you. The added sugars and added fats in these drinks can really add up to high calories! |
